Q&A:
How did you come up with Reasons to Act?
When I was writing book two in the 3000 Reasons Series, Reasons to Risk, but this character, Olivia, showed up in a couple of the scenes and she just wouldnāt leave me alone! She had a kind of Ilona Mahar vibe and I kept asking myself, who would challenge her? What kind of hero would be strong enough to accept her be so strong? Around the same time I saw Fall Guy with Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling and it gave me the idea of putting the book on a movie set with all the pressures and drama.
Do you identify with your characters?
As a woman who grew up doing heavy farm work and loves lifting weights, I identified with Olivia in terms of the need to feel strong, and for the need for exercise as an outlet. Even so while sometimes envying the experience of more dainty or traditionally delicate people. I also identified with her sense of being out of place in a new situation but also to be determined to succeed. I love those sorts of converse feelings.
Are there scenes that you find particularly difficult to write?
I always have a hard time with the third act breakup, in part because part of me sort of hates to tear them apart, even when doing so is critical for the ultimate success of the relationship. Then I have to remind myself that that breakup isnāt just for fun, itās necessary for both characters to finish their emotional arc and prove to themselves their feelings are real. Those scenes are also difficult because by the time I get to them Iām exhausted, nearing the end of the book, and often as emotionally wrung out as the characters. Itās a trial for all of us!
What is your preferred snack while writing?
I try not to snack while writing too much, but when I do itās with a cup of herbal tea, apple slices and cheese. Iāll throw in chocolate covered almonds if I need an extra boost.
What movies fit the vibe of this book?
As I mentioned earlier, Fall Guy, in part because I think Chris Blackstone has a kind of Ryan Gosling inspiration going on. Also thereās for sure some The Hating Game (book or movie) vibes, and a touch of Top Gun: Maverick or (if youāre feeling old school) Hot Shots, for a little of that military touch with drama that boarders on ridiculous.
What is your writing routine?
I write from home and have four kids, so my most productive days are during the school year. I get up early, get in a work out, drink too much coffee, do farm chores, get the kids out the door to school, and then sit down at the desk. I try to get social media and emails out of the way early and focus on the writing, listening to music that fits the vibe of the scene Iām working on. Sometimes I get up and take a walk in the fields with the dogs and dictate to change things up. If Iām really on a roll Iāll write in the evening as well, but typically once the kids are back home thereās not a lot of time for that.
Book blurb:
Can a Marine on a mission handle Hollywoodās hottest star? The sparks on the action movie set are nothing compared to the ones flying between themā¦
Olivia Quinn succeeds through simplicity and discipline, whether sheās dominating in the gym, or serving as a Marine. But when her director brother unexpectedly makes her the military consultant on his latest action film, her structured plans go out the window and sheās thrown into an unfamiliar and unpredictable world alongside hotshot action star Chris Blackstone. The cocky actor is everything she canāt stand, with his chiseled, self-important abs, condescension, and charmāfor to everyone except her.
Chris is determined to make Desert Strike the blockbuster hit his new production company needs. A fake PR romance with his popular co-star keeps the publicās attention on the movie and distracts the media from his messy family drama. The last thing he has time for is clashing with a disturbingly hot, no-nonsense Marine consultant who sees right through his act. And he definitely canāt afford to fall for her.
Staged explosions give way to sizzling chemistry neither of them can ignore. But when Chrisās ghosts and the paparazzi twist their connection into a media firestorm, he faces a brutal choice: Will he protect the career and image he works so hard forāor fight for the woman who makes him feel like a real person? And under the burning spotlight, Olivia must decide if a lifetime of building strength means sheās strong enough to be honest with herself and open her heart to the vulnerability of love.
