My review:
When Avery gets a call from the school saying daughter, Mia, hasn’t been picked up she starts to worry, obviously. Where is Keith and why isn’t he answering his phone? Turns out he’s the victim of a hit and run.
Told mostly by Avery with some chapters from the past and The Watcher, who does not like Avery’s parenting skills.
For most of Avery’s life her mother has struggled with mental illness and her father with alcohol. Both are highly emphasized in this story. Avery isn’t too keen, but she temporarily moves in with them to get extra help with Mia. And her godmother, Ruth, lives right next door, so there’s an extra set of helpful hands.
I didn’t find Avery to be a particularly dotting mother as all she mostly did was sit by Keith’s side hoping and praying, day in and out, that he’d wake up so he can explain why he whispered I took a life right before slipping into a coma. And those words have Avery on a wild goose chase about their meaning. She’ll be utterly shocked about discovery after discovery.
Overall, this started a bit slow for me with all the back and forth to the hospital, but once the pace picked up I liked it. I wasn’t overly surprised by the big reveals, but happy with how it all played out.
Side note ~ I don’t think the title fits the story.
āļøed another old one off the list!

Book blurb:
I thought I knew my husband. I was wrong…
I have the perfect life: a loving marriage, and an adorable little daughter,Ā Mia, who is always full of smiles. But when my husbandĀ KeithĀ is hit by a car, my whole world is turned upside down. With my heart breaking in his cold white hospital room, I hold his hand and tell him how much I love him. Then just as Keith slips into a coma,Ā I hear him say four words that change everything:Ā I took a life.
Mia and I move into my childhood home with my parents for support, and I spend hours by Keithās hospital bedside, willing him to wake up. I keep his last words to myself; I cannot believe my gentle husband would hurt anyone. But as I search through his belongings, it becomes clear that he was hiding something.
And when I discover a note in my parentsā attic, my breath catches in my throat. My husband is not the only one in my family with a dark secret, and Iām beginning to think what happened to him was far from an accidentā¦
But just as I get closer to the truth, my daughter goes missing. Iāll do whatever it takes to save my child. ButĀ I soon realize I was wrong about everyone I thought I could trustā¦
Totally gripping and unputdownable domestic suspense about family secrets and lies. Perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty and Diane Chamberlain.
