Standalone Novel
Hello and thank you so much for having me on your blog. I am here today to talk about my new novel, Not Moving Out, which is out on May 15th in eBook and paperback!
I have just finished writing five other blog posts about my book where I have covered all manner of things, so please go and check those out. As this is my final blog post to write for the tour, I am going to talk about myself. Who am I? How did I get published? What’s coming up next?
If you don’t know me, my name is Jon Rance and I am a British author, although interesting fact, I live in California. I met my American wife while backpacking around Australia in 2003 and I have been in America since 2004, although I still love England and get back as often as I can. I have written for as long as I can remember, but it wasn’t until we had children that I decided to have a real crack at it. My first book, This Thirtysomething Life, was published way back in 2013 by Hodder and Stoughton and my second, Happy Endings, soon after.
My journey to publication was overnight and it took years. Let me start at the beginning. I wrote a couple of novels that got nowhere, rejected (by actual mail because this was before the internet made it easier) by every agent, and so when I finished This Thirtysomething Life and it was also rejected, I got a bit annoyed. I had spent about four years writing three novels and literally no-one had read them. So, I self-published it on the Kindle. This was around the same time as Nick Spalding did the same, and our careers have gone side-by-side since. He has been much more successful than me, but he’s a very nice bloke so I let that go. Anyway, it was self-published, it did very well, and I got offered a publishing deal by Hodder and Stoughton as a result. I also got an agent too.
A quick summary of the next ten years. I lost my agent, self-published nine books on my own, and then get a two-book deal with Hera in 2024. The first of that deal, One Hundred Moments Of Us, was published last year. The second of that deal, Not Moving Out, is coming out in May. This brings me up to today. Here, writing this blog post. So, what’s next? I have already finished my next book – another rom-com set across two continents – and I am trying to get a deal for that and another book soon. This is my writing life in a nutshell.
Who am I like? Well, my inspiration when I started writing was Nick Hornby and Mike Gayle. I loved their casual, conversational style of writing about love from the male perspective. Since then, I would add David Nicholls to that list, and in terms of women probably Mhairi McFarlane, who is brilliant and lovely, and Beth O’Leary. I think you can imagine the sort of books I write. I love
writing about love. It’s like another of my heroes, Richard Curtis, wrote: It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends.
Thank you so much for reading my blog post and please, if you can, pick up a copy of Not Moving Out.
Book blurb:
Spouses Without Benefits – how can you move on without moving out?
Freya and Joe’s marriage has fizzled its way to the end, but for financial reasons, and to support their daughter in her final year of school, they decide they need to keep living together for six months.
They know it won’t be easy, but for Joe at least, it provides creative rewards: a struggling sitcom writer, he has found his new project. Why not write about his own situation? And the network loves it.
There is just one problem – Freya doesn’t know.
Can Freya and Joe navigate the six months together and might they find out something new about their relationship?
A relatable second-chance romcom perfect for fans of Mike Gayle and Beth O’Leary.
