My review:
A bit about the story:
Max and the Mighty Hurricane supports Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) by helping children process fear, build resilience, and navigate change. Through self-awareness and emotional regulation,
children learn to understand their feelings and cope with uncertainty. The story also highlights the importance of community support, showing how family and neighbors come together after a disaster. This book is a valuable resource for parents, educators, and organizations promoting emotional well-being.
What I liked:
~ how Max’s parents got him involved in the process of getting ready for the storm and how there’s a checklist at the end to make sure the essentials are readily available in case they are needed quickly.
~ his fears seemed in line with a child his age.
He looked around his roomāat his favorite toys, books, and drawings he had spent so much time on. āWhat about my stuff? What if itās gone when we come back?ā he asked with a trembling voice.
~ how he had friends to hunker down with to help ease some of the nerves they’re undoubtedly feeling
~ how there was notable damage to show the reality of what these storms can do
He clutched his momās hand, his eyes stinging with tears. āWill it ever be the same again?ā he whispered.
This book is a helpful guide for children that live in hurricane territory, and for those that might have friends or family in the path, to help them become familiar with how they effect lives and the community.
Illustration notes:
They seem true to the story. I especially like how the faces of everyone showed the worry they were undoubtedly feeling.
